ASLIB NEWS AND PRESS RELEASES:

  • ASLIB ENHANCES SUPPORT TO MEMBERS (21/07/05)

    A
    slib is one of the leading global information management organisations offering an attractive package of membership benefits to corporate members. Benefits include subscriptions to two professional journals and our award winning Managing Information magazine. Key services include a comprehensive suite of professional training courses including customer on-sites available the world over, and a leading recruitment service and consultancy. Discounts on Aslib branded information management books, listings on the web sites, and a copy of the Aslib membership directory complete the membership package.

    The members include leading organisations throughout the world in governments, international NGO's, business, commerce and education (see www.aslib.com, membership section, site for a listing).

    One of Aslib's great strengths is the networking facility provided by its Special Interest Groups (SIG's) and Branches. They offer a flexible platform for networking and professional development through meetings and committee membership as well as the opportunity to participate in Aslib's advocacy and campaigning activities.

    A major development this year was the decision to pass on to the groups the Special Interest Group supplements that are paid by corporate members. This will further enhance the SIG and Branch activities for the benefit of members. SIG's and Branches will benefit directly and proportionately from Aslib corporate membership growth, the more member supplements we receive, the more money will be passed to the groups (depending of course on which groups the corporate members sign up to) and Branches, to spend in the best interests of the membership.

    At any one time there are impending legislative and policy issues raised by governments, which have a critical effect on business, commerce and education throughout the world. Building on its 81 years of global experience in information and knowledge management and its professional network, Aslib has an enviable record of influencing, advising and informing governments and world NGO's, on critical issues such as copyright, data protection, freedom of information, and much more.

    Current issues include:
    *Whether the EU ecommerce directive as applied in the UK should extend protection for hyperlinkers;
    *EU Directive on enforcement of intellectual property rights;
    *Extending the copyright term for music (this will set a precedent for changing the term for other aspects of copyright);
    *A forthcoming report on the Patent Office review of the Database Directive;
    *Monitoring the effects of the FoI act;
    *Whether the information management and library schools are producing graduates which meet the needs of the workplace;
    *Monitoring effects of re-use of public sector information regulations which have just come into effect.

    Once again Aslib will be mobilising the power of its member network to the benefit of both its corporate member organisations and the wider public.

    The work of the Groups and Branches is supported by Graham Coult, editor of Managing Information magazine, who has a voluntary role co-ordinating the representational and advocacy activities, and producing new SIG members newsletters which are being introduced. Other important elements of the interaction between Aslib and its members include the Aslib membership manager, Saul Frazer, and other relevant member of staff for a given area, the customer advisory group which had its first meeting in March, and direct contact as necessary between SIG committee members and the Managing Director, Roger Bowes

    In the coming months we have a number of exciting events and initiatives for our members.

    Managing Information has a new job vacancies service. Jobs appear on the recruitment pages of the Managing Information web site (more than 8 million hits in 2004!), and in the weekly newsletter, which goes out to 4000
    subscribers each week. A very large, and relevant, audience sees the vacancies.

    To enhance the package of benefits we offer, corporate members qualify for a 20% discount on the cost of Managing Information recruitment advertisements.

    The new autumn training brochure has just been published, announcing a number of new courses including Creative Commons Licences; Freedom of Information half-day workshop and others. Anyone who would like more information, should visit www.aslib.com/training or call us on 020 7613 3031 for a copy of the brochure.

    The world leading "Translating and the Computer Conference" now in its 27th year will take place in November in London. Supported by British Computer Society, European and International Associations for Machine Translation; Institute of Linguists and the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. This year, for the first time, the conference sponsor is LISA. For more information, please visit: www.aslib.com/conferences

    Aslib is in a new and exciting phase, in which the discipline of keeping customers satisfied with their services will continue to shape the organisation for a successful future.
