  IT challenges and opportunities for translators - productivity tools and file formats

  Timed to coincide with TC’s 30th Anniversary Conference, this seminar will cover dedicated tools for routine translation tasks.Ana Luiza Iaria and Peter Linton will give an overview of the latest productivity-enhancing software packages and address some issues translators may encounter with the many types of file that come their way. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. Participants will have an opportunity to submit queries in advance.
                                                 
  Background
  Though most translations are still done in a Microsoft Word format, translators are now asked to work with other file formats, such as PDF files, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, files embedded in Word (eg Excel, WordArt), files from various desktop publishing packages such as Quark or InDesign, and tagged file formats, such as XML and its growing number of variants.

  This offers technical challenges to translators, but also opportunities to do work that other translators cannot or will not, and to charge accordingly. The seminar will look at the problems, how to deal with them and how to talk to clients about the issues involved.

  We will also be talking about productivity tools for translators, eg for maintaining TM glossaries and back-up solutions, procedures and software, including alternatives to Microsoft and free or inexpensive software tools and open-source tools.
