ASLIB RECRUITMENT: INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES

Having secured an interview on the strengh of your CV, your performance at the interview is the next crucial step to an offer of employment.

Research:
The most important research you can do before you attend an interview is to find out as much as you can about the company. Most companies will forward you a company information pack on request, and also provide you with an annual report or refer you to the company Website. Many organisation's annual reports are now available online.

First Impressions:
Arrive on time - make allowances for travel mishaps. Dress smartly and professionally. Be polite to all employees. Greet the interviewer with a smile and a firm handshake.

During the Interview:
If you feel nervous take a deep breath. Listen carefully to questions, think, then answer. If you don't understand a question ask them to rephrase it. Don't waffle, divert or sidetrack awkward questions - honesty is always your best policy. Don't be derogatory about previous colleagues and employers. Always smile and use eye contact.

Typical interview questions:

Can you tell me about a time when you were forced to make an unpopular decision?
Why do you want to work for this company?
What do you know about our company and our products?
Why do you want to leave your current employers?
What do you think the company gained during your employment time?
What are your career plans and ambitions?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Describe a time when you were faced with a stressful situation that demonstrated your coping skills.
What are you looking for in a new job? What would your ideal job be?
How would you describe yourself?
How do you handle criticism? Can you act on your own initiative?
Tell me a little more about yourself e.g. hobbies and interests
Give me a specific example of a time when you were set a goal and were able to meet or achieve it.

Questions you may want to ask:
If successful, where will I fit into the organisation structure?
What scope is there for development?
What training will I receive?
When will you decide on the appointment?
What is the next step?
If needed clarify salary, benefits and bonuses - not too early in the conversation
