Although the Chinese New Year does not align exactly with the New Year's Day of the Gregorian Calendar (the one in widespread global use) – the Chinese New Year being on the first new moon of the first lunar month – 2012 is nevertheless being heralded as the Year of the Dragon.
Dragons in the western world have laboured under an image problem, being seen as evil creatures, with the likes of Saint George being on a mission to kill them. While I do not pretend to be an expert on Zodiac signs, background reading has revealed a different image for the dragon of the Chinese Zodiac.
Qualities which seem to be associated with the Chinese dragon include being a free spirit who prefers to live by their own rules, ambition, being unafraid of challenges, willing to take risks, passionate about what they do and usually successful.
These seem to be useful character traits to adopt for the challenges facing us in 2012. Certainly passion, energy and fearlessness, combined with an attitude suited to success will be advantageous. Independent thinking is also very useful. Times are very challenging, but challenges are there to be addressed, and preferably turned to advantage.
