Intricacies of Internet Search Tools

Programme Features

This one day course looks in detail at the workings of contemporary Internet search tools. It aims to reveal how searches can be carried out faster, and with greater accuracy, and is suitable for anyone wishing to perform more efficient and effective searches for information on the Internet. The course explains the terminology, principles of text retrieval, search commands, limiters, and newer features associated with Internet search tools. In addition, the differences between search engines and directories are explored, and ways to find specific information sources including lists of links and directories are suggested. Examples from popular disciplines will be used throughout the day, although the principles outlined are valid for searching in any subject area. The day will consist of presentations, examples and hands-on time. Participants will be encouraged to try out queries that they have encountered in real life, or that reflect a subject relevant to their work. A resource list will be provided.

Who should attend:

The course is suitable for anyone who uses, or is starting to use, the Internet for any kind of information work. The material covered does not require any existing information skills, although participants are required to use a computer running Windows and Internet Explorer. The course is designed for those who wish to improve their ability to search for resources over the Internet.
