TRAINING: CAREERS INFORMATION
Pre-course
experience
Increasingly
employers prefer to take on candidates with previous work
experience. The majority of postgraduate courses also require
a year's relevant experience before offering a place. Students
taking non-LIS first degrees should be aware of this and
endeavour to find relevant work experience if they are considering
taking postgraduate courses; any experience of working can
only help in the future. Some commercial libraries offer
pre-school training posts for graduates and the Chartered
Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP)
run a placement scheme for those wishing to obtain pre-school
training in university libraries. This Graduate Training
Opportunities scheme incorporates the SCONUL Trainee Scheme.
Some recruitment agencies may be able to offer placements,
but generally they deal with post training positions.
